Overview of Express Entry

Express Entry is Canada’s online application management system used by IRCC to select skilled workers for permanent residence under three federal economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Eligible candidates create an online profile and are ranked in the Express Entry pool using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). IRCC then conducts regular rounds of invitations, inviting selected candidates to apply for permanent residence.

How Express Entry Rounds of Invitations Work

Express Entry draws are officially called rounds of invitations. In each Express Entry draw, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ranks candidates in the Express Entry pool using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), a points-based ranking system that evaluates factors such as age, education, work experience, and language ability. Approximately every two weeks, IRCC conducts a round of invitations and selects the highest-ranking candidates—or those who meet specific program-based or category-based criteria—to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.

To understand the Express Entry draws, you must understand the three types of rounds currently in use:

  • General Rounds: These rounds invite the highest-ranking candidates from the entire pool, regardless of their program or occupation.
  • Program-Specific Rounds: These express entry draws target only one program, such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
  • Category-Based Selection: Introduced to fill specific labor shortages, these draws target candidates with specific skills, such as French proficiency, STEM, Healthcare, or Trades experience.

Category-based draws often result in significantly lower CRS cut-off scores.
